Hello, I’m Joshua Layton, a Vancouver-based senior social impact designer and strategist.
My practice and career are guided by an important question:
How can design tackle the world’s most pressing challenges?
This question sits at the heart of my design ethos. I believe in design's potential to spark equity, peace, justice, and joy. My purpose is defined by collaborating with grassroots community groups, global non-profits, and zealous individuals and social entrepreneurs committed to championing a just and resilient future.
Over the past twelve years, I've joined forces with many causes addressing the pressing issues of our time, including Oxfam, UNICEF, Teach For Canada and WWF. Together, we've woven a design mindset into their work, particularly during pivotal moments of transformation. I help express their purpose and stories through an empathy-driven approach, crafting meaningful and visually compelling brands, campaigns, websites and assets that mobilize support and drive results.
My time is currently divided between my design practice, guiding the creative team at Loop: Design For Social Good—the agency I co-founded in 2012—and serving as Creative Director at Living Hyphen—a magazine and platform that amplifies hyphenated Canadian voices.
Hear more about my design philosophy with my colleague and collaborator, Emma Steele, below.
